* Emerson Drive's David Pichette to Welcome Baby No. 2
Emerson Drive's David Pichette will soon be even more outnumbered in his household! The fiddle player has confirmed exclusively with The Boot that his wife, Jill, is pregnant with their second daughter, due in October.
"My daughter Emma is now 19-months-old, and she is growing up so fast," David tells The Boot. "She is just unbelievable. Now we've got another one on the way. I'm excited! My daughter is going to have a little sister ... I'm very, very lucky."
David and Jill have not decided what they're going to call Emma's little sis just yet. "We have a few names picked out, but it's one of those things you decide in the last 48 hours," David says. "That's when you really make up your mind. That's probably what's going to be happening this time around."
Little Emma Pichette has had plenty of experience on how to handle a newborn baby. Jill's twin sister, Jana, is married to Emerson Drive's lead vocalist, Brad Mates, and they just became new parents to a baby boy in April.
"My daughter has been practicing with little baby dolls rather than babies," David explains. "Obviously, because Brad and I are family, when his son was born, she saw this baby that was actually alive. She was like, 'Baby!' Then she pushed him. We were like, 'No, no you can't do that!' But now they love each other. She's always kissing the baby, so it's great."
Emerson Drive's new single, 'That Kind of Beautiful,' hits radio airwaves August 16. A video will accompany the single and will feature Emma, as well as Jana Mates when she was pregnant, and drummer Mike Melancon's father-in-law.
* Emerson Drive Singer Gets 'Framed' for Diaper Duty
It has been two and a half months since Emerson Drive frontman Brad Mates became a first-time father. On April 28, Brad's wife, Jana, gave birth to their son, Tyler Robert Mates, in Nashville. Brad is the second Emerson Drive member to have a child, as fiddler David Pichette welcomed daughter Emma in November 2008.
"For every parent, you go through some things similar and some things completely different.," Brad tells The Boot. "The one thing Jana and I have found is we just roll with the punches. Whatever works for us and whatever seems to work for our kid is the role that we have taken now. We didn't take any birthing classes. We just read up a lot on what we should expect. There's been a lot of our friends who have gone through as many classes as you can go through before your child is born, and nothing goes to plan. So we just wanted to leave it open, and it worked out for the best. We've been very lucky to have things go the way they have with a healthy baby."
Brad himself has been lucky in many ways, including having the opportunity to spend multiple days a week at home with Tyler and Jana. When he is home, Brad lends as much help as he can to his wife by taking the night and morning shifts to give her an extra few hours of sleep each day. He also enjoys the task of changing diapers ... maybe a little too much!
"Changing his diapers is my favorite thing. I'm one of those parents who is really proud if he makes a really bad mess in his diaper. I'll be like, 'Jana! You've got to come look at this!'" Brad says with laughter. "I want to frame one of them -- that's how proud I am sometimes of what he can do in there. He's crazy!"
Brad says his newborn son is "a bit of a mixture" of both parents. "He's got Jana's forehead. She's got these four wrinkles on her forehead when she looks at me in funny ways, and he has the exact same wrinkles in the exact same spots," Brad says, smiling. "He's got my nose and my lips. We'll see what the hair does because I was blonde when I was born, and my sister and Jana were, too. I'm now dark brown, so we'll see what happens in the next few months."
The other thing which will unfold over the next several months is the direction of Emerson Drive's music now that there are two fathers in the band. "I believe in the last four years we've gone through some pretty big change when it comes to our music and writing what we write now," Brad notes. "I think it's from getting out of our 20's and entering our 30's and starting families. That has a lot to do with new parts of your life that you get to express on paper sometimes. I'm curious to see what's going to happen in the next couple of years, with David and me especially having kids now. There's just a greater meaning for going out on the road and calling this a job. We're supporting families in a big way now. It's not just ourselves. I'm excited to see what comes in the next few years."
Emerson Drive is gearing up to release their new single, 'That Kind of Beautiful,' next month. A new album is expected to be released this fall or early next year.

* Campus Activities Magazine honors Emerson Drive
Nashville, TN - The Valory Music Co./Midas Records' Emerson Drive are once again on the ballot for the 2009 Campus Activities Magazine Reader's Choice Awards in the category of "Best Major Performance." The band took NACA by Storm in 2005, leading to a college tour, subsequent re-bookings and in 2008, they took home the CAM Reader's Choice Award for "Best Major Performance." The quintet's energizing live show has made them the most popular band on the college circuit.
Popularity, however, doesn't come without hard work, and Emerson Drive, often referred to as the "hardest working band" in country music, has put a lot of miles on the road to get where they are today, one million miles to be exact! The band's tour bus recently rolled over one million miles and you can catch the story and see their brand new bus this weekend on "CMT Insider," Sat, Jan. 17 at 1:30 PM EST.
Emerson Drive are gearing up for the release of their fourth studio album, BELIEVE, once again produced by Teddy Gentry (member of country supergroup Alabama) and Josh Leo. The powerhouse team produced the band's last album, COUNTRIFIED, which yielded Emerson Drive's first #1 song, the GRAMMY nominated ballad, "Moments."
BELIEVE is slated for release this spring and features the current single, "Belongs To You," which is quickly climbing the charts at country radio.
Voting for the 2009 Campus Activities Magazine's Reader's Choice Awards is underway. Be sure to visit http://www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com/awards to cast your vote for Emerson Drive!
* Emerson Drive’s Brad Mates Has Emergency Landing
Nashville, TN - Emerson Drive lead singer Brad Mates and his wife Jana flew back from a holiday vacation earlier this week not expecting such a speedy landing! The plane carrying the newlyweds back to Nashville was diverted to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on a return trip from Maine.
As the plane began it’s descent, the captain announced to the passengers that they were going to make a change in airports because they needed a longer runway. Ten minutes before they landed, the captain made a second announcement, explaining that all passengers should expect a rough landing.
Immediately the flight attendants went over the emergency crash positions with everyone on the plane, asking a few people to be in charge of opening the doors and getting people to jump down on the inflatable slides if needed when the plane came to a stop.
Mates recounted, “As we descended toward the airport, the flight attendants made repeated announcements to ‘duck and brace, duck and brace.’ When we touched down, you could feel the plane was moving faster than it usually does for a normal landing. When the pilots pushed on the brakes the plane vibrated, and then we finally came to a stop. I lifted my head from the crash position and looked out of the window to see several fire trucks, ambulances and other safety vehicles.”
Once the plane was safely stopped the Captain made another announcement to let everyone know that they were safe. Passengers were clapping, cheering, and crying…all happy to be safely on the ground!
As they were leaving the plane the Mates’ found out that the flaps on the wings would not work when the pilots had been cleared for landing, and without the flaps to help slow down the plane it basically lands at a speed unsafe for tires, brakes and control. “It was a pretty crazy, exciting, scary experience to say the least,” says Mates. “One I won't forget!”
Emerson Drive is gearing up for the spring release of their brand new CD, BELIEVE, on The Valory Music Co./Midas Records Nashville. The debut single, “Belongs To You,” is currently making its way up the country charts.

* Having Trouble Finding The Guys of Emerson Drive a Christmas Gift?
Holiday Shopping Lists
The guys in Emerson Drive have the same things on their Christmas list that most artists do. Things like...
1) Peace on Earth
2) Platinum Album in 2009
3) Another #1 single (or 2, okay maybe 3)
4) A great touring year visiting with and performing for country fans across North America
but their individual lists have other things:
Brad: For Christmas this year I would like to have 5 feet of snow for snowmobiling, enough eggnog and captain to ice fish on the lake at my parents cabin, and an extra day with family when I'm not quite ready to leave!
Dale: I hope that Santa brings me an official Red Ryder carbine-action two hundred shot range model air rifle!
Danick: A 1959 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop Guitar. I saw one for $385,000.00 on eBay the other day!!!!
David: My wife and I are expecting our first baby on December 6th [Emma arrived on Nov. 21st, Mom & Baby are both doing well] so, needless to say, my life will now completely revolve around her every little need. What I want the more than anything this year is for her to be healthy.
Mike: For Christmas I want $10,000,000. Please Santa, I've been a good boy this year! ;-) Seriously, some peace and happiness for the whole world would be the best gift.
* Welcome baby Emma!
Nashville, TN – David Pichette and wife Jill welcomed their first child Emma Victoria Pichette into the world on Friday November 21, 2008. Little Emma made her grand entrance at 5:35 pm weighing in at 5 pounds and 14 ounces.
“This is definitely the greatest moment of my life. To see your own take her first breath and hear her first cry. Jill and Emma are in perfect health and I must say, my heart goes out to all the new parents who may live the birth of their child a bit differently and with a few more complications. I count my blessings every day,” exclaims David.
Emerson Drive wraps up their tour this year on December 12th. Their new single “Belongs to You” is climbing the radio charts and the full length CD is slated for a spring 2009 release.
* Emerson Drive Welcomes First Baby
By: Jennifer Anderson
Emerson Drive's fiddle player, David Pichette, and his wife Jill welcomed their first child into the world on Friday (November 21st) at 5:35 PM (CT). Little Emma Victoria Pichette weighed in at 5 pounds, 14 ounces.
Pichette told us last week that he was fully expecting to eat fast food for Thanksgiving, because of Emma's expected arrival. But, Emerson Drive's Brad Mates was quick to point out that under normal circumstances, Pichette is the band's best cook. "(Mates:) David for sure. By far. (Pichette:) I see fingers pointing. (Mates:) I've been over to his place a few times for dinner, and you don't even have to ask. Because everything is what you would see on the Food Network, done preparation-wise, everything is perfect."
And just how did Pichette get to be such a great cook? "I think it was in my previous life actually. I think I was probably a chef in some French restaurant somewhere. Because sometimes I'm like, where . . .? My wife is always asking 'how do you get these things to taste like that, to be like this.'I'm just like, 'I don't know, I just improvise all the time. I have an idea of how it should look and taste and then I just do it.'"
While most of the guys of Emerson Drive seemed to be planning big meals for Thanksgiving, bachelor Dale Wallace told us he was keeping it very simple. "I've invited everybody over for Thanksgiving at my house for pork rinds and Corona. (laugh)"
* EMERSON DRIVE TO CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING DAY TWICE
A while back the members of Emerson Drive became American Citizens and now have dual Canadian and American roots. Because of that they have to celebrate two Thanksgiving Days.
Thanksgiving in Canada in October.“We are celebrating, but each of us will be in different spots around the country,” notes Brad Mates. “We get spoiled, because we all try to make it home to Canada to celebrate Thanksgiving with our families in October, and now with three of us married, we celebrate with family and friends here in the US.” For Emerson Drive’s David Pichette, Thanksgiving will take on a new meaning with the birth this week of his new baby girl, Emma. “Thanksgiving is taking on a brand new meaning for me. My new baby girl Emma gives me a new outlook on what to be thankful for and what to hope for in the years to come.”
* Emerson Drive Awaits Band's First Baby
By: Jennifer Anderson
Last year, Emerson Drive was a band of bachelors. This year, three of the five bandmembers tied the knot. Now, fiddle player David Pichette is anxiously awaiting the birth of not only his first child, but the first baby for the band. Pichette says: "I'm excited. I've been excited. I'm having a little girl. And she's going to be here in the next week, we're not too sure when. She's all healthy and everything. It really gives me such another appreciation of life. And the bond that you develop with your wife, throughout the whole nine months. It just makes me a very happy man."
Pichette laughs that while his bandmates Brad Mates and Mike Melancon also got married this year, they are waiting to see how he handles fatherhood before they take the plunge: "I think they're testing it out on me. They're going to see how it goes. Then they're going to be like, alright, it wasn't that bad for Dave, so... (laugh)."
Pichette revealed that last year's death of former bandmate Patrick Bourque influenced his decision to get married and start a family. He says that up until that time, he had always concentrated on his art. Bourque's death made him realize there is more to life.
* New single, "Belongs To You," hits airwaves November 17th

* Mates has two weddings in one week
From staff writer Cindy Watts:
Emerson Drive singer Brad Mates walked down the aisle twice in one week this month.
Brad married girlfriend Jana Raymond in her home state of Maine on Oct. 4, then played the role of the groom in the band's new music video four days later.
While Brad prefers to keep the exact details of his real wedding private, he and his band mates transformed the theater at Nashville's Grand Masonic Lodge to reflect the nuptial needs of the video for "Belongs to You."
"A lot of times in our late teens to early 30s, we go down a path that isn't really where we end up," he says of the song. "We do some changing, and then when you meet that person it's where you're going to end up for the rest of your life. So that's why we wanted to tie the wedding into this."
Of the video, Brad says, "The basic idea is that a wedding has happened here. I'm walking back in here after it was over with and reliving some of those experiences."

* Congrats to Mr. & Mrs. David Pichette
E-drive fiddler David Pichette and girlfriend Jill tied the knot outside Las Vegas at the Valley of Fire on May 15th. Pichette did double duty in Vegas as the band were there because of their ACM Nominations for Group of the Year & for Song of the Year (Moments).
* Emerson Drive enjoys the moment
From staff writer Cindy Watts:
When Emerson Drive arrived at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas last year, the group’s single “Moments” was in the top 5 on Billboard’s country singles chart. It went No. 1 a few weeks later, during June’s CMA Music Festival.
This year, when Emerson Drive returns for Sunday night’s ACM Awards show, it does so as a double nominee, thanks to the song’s success.
“It’s great to see the Emerson Drive name in a couple of categories, especially in the song of the year category for ‘Moments,’” said Brad Mates, the band’s lead singer. “This is a huge year for us. There’s a lot of weight on our shoulders, and a lot of people are expecting some big things. There’s no better time than right now for this band because of the opportunity that’s in front of us. All we need now is some great songs to push us to the next step. And I have no question in my mind that we have that on the new CD,” out later this year.
However, Brad admits he initially had reservations about recording “Moments,” which tells the story of a man contemplating suicide.
“I was a little scared of it in the beginning, just because I hadn’t gone through anything like that in my life before where it was really traumatic,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that if I was going to sing this song, it was believable. It’s obviously pretty ironic now that we have a song about suicide go No. 1, and we lose one of our members (Patrick Bourque) to suicide in the same year. It’s crazy, and obviously meant for this band for a reason. I’m just so excited to know it still carries on.”
But the Vegas vacation isn’t all work for the band, which is also nominated for top vocal group. Emerson Drive’s fiddle player David Pichette is getting married just outside of Las Vegas in the Valley of Fire on Saturday.
“We’re going to be busy with a lot of ACM stuff and then making sure we enjoy Dave’s wedding,” Brad said.

* Emerson Drive presses on through loss of bassist
Canadian country stars Emerson Drive have admirably pressed on in the wake of the sudden death of former bassist Patrick Bourque last fall, remaining highly visible in Nashville — they played a free show at Sommet Center in November and talked to The Tennessean last week about progress on their new album while appearing at the Nashville Film Festival.
You'll have to pay for their Sunday concert at the Ryman Auditorium (116 Fifth Ave. N., 458-8700), but it's for a good reason: Jammin' to Beat the Blues is a benefit for the Mental Health Association of Middle Tennessee and will also feature Heidi Newfield, formerly of Trick Pony, and country rocker Jonathan Singleton.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $29.50.
—DAVE PAULSON, STAFF WRITER
* Emerson Drive to play at benefit
When Emerson Drive takes the Ryman stage Sunday to sing their hit "Moments," it will be a painful reminder of the importance of the night's mission: raising money for Mental Health Association of Middle Tennessee.
Emerson Drives headlines the 10th annual Jammin' to Beat the Blues, a 7:30 p.m. show that also features Heidi Newfield and Jonathan Singleton.
"Moments" tells the story of how a homeless man prevents a young man from committing suicide. In July 2007, the band had a party celebrating the No. 1 hit, and that same month, Patrick Bourque, 29, left the group amicably because he wanted to get off the road. Two months later, he killed himself.
"The irony in that song now is unbelievable some nights," Emerson Drive's Brad Mates said. "This song has taken on a whole new meaning every single night we play it onstage. There's not one person up there playing this song who doesn't think about it throughout the night."
The band is dedicated to raising awareness about depression. Brad says one in four people in America have signs of mental depression. "Everybody goes through something a little bit different," he said. "Sometimes you can see the signs right off the start; sometimes they are very masked. Sometimes people don't talk and sometimes they do talk about problems."
Tickets are $29.50 and available through the Ryman or Ticketmaster.

April 4, 2008 - It's a good thing the guys in Emerson Drive like baseball, because they'll see plenty of it next week. The band will appear at two home openers in the Midwest Monday and Tuesday, singing the national anthem in Chicago and Kansas City. "This is going to be fun," lead singer Brad Mates says. "I'm a big baseball fan, and season openers are always exciting. It's a real honor to be part of these opening days for the White Sox and for the Royals. Plus, they've given us great seats — not a bad way to spend an afternoon or two."
During Monday's game in Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field, featuring the visiting Minnesota Twins, Brad will sign autographs and give away souvenirs with his bandmates: fiddler David Pichette, piano player Dale Wallace, guitarist Danick Dupelle and drummer Mike Melancon. When the New York Yankees visit Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium the next day, the band will follow the opening rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" by leading the crowd in "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch.
They won't be the only country stars visiting major-league ballparks this week. Jack Ingram is also on tap to provide the anthem Monday at the Houston Astros' home opener, and Neal McCoy does the honors Tuesday for the Texas Rangers in Dallas.

August 2, 2007 — Emerson Drive's recent Canadian Country Music Association Awards nominations were a validation of sorts for the guys, who have paid their dues for years. "It's funny because we seem to take a little bit of flack every once in a while for certain things," lead singer Brad Mates tells Dial-Global. "Over the last seven years, being able to live in Nashville and have a record deal in the U.S., we're able to tour 95 percent of the time down here. It's nice, obviously, to get back home and play some of the shows that we do and to show people what we've accomplished. We're the first Canadian band ever to have a No. 1 in the U.S. So it's nice to be able to say that we've made a little bit of history, I guess, and to show the naysayers years ago that this is really something that is working."
In addition to their nominations as a group, each musician in the band is nominated for the 2007 CCMA All-Star Band Awards. The winners will be revealed on September 10 at the Brandt Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan.

*Single Review from AllAccess.com
You Still Own Me
These Canadian crooners have followed up their first #1 with a solid mid-tempo tune that proves they are definitely not a one hit wonder. This song has a nice laid back feel that makes it a great choice for the hot weather most of us are enduring. These guys have talent to spare and they pick great material that is well suited for them. This song will fit easily into your play list right between the core acts that you play. Let's make these guys into the stars they should be. Impacting now.
* New US Single Coming in July

* E-drive Hits the CMA Music Festival HARD & Give in the Process
CMA Music Festival is one constant week of no sleep and the guys of Emerson Drive were no exception to that. They started out the week helping Lonestar and others raise money for St. Jude's through bowling and meeting with fans. They continued their week by doing other benefits, such as Chely Wright's Reading, Writing & Rhythm benefit and helped serve food with Second Harvest on National Hunger Awareness Day, and helped the Opry with its Opry Trust Fund benefit at the Ryman and also did their part to help Second Harvest at their fan club party by asking fans to bring a jar of peanut butter to replenish the supply food banks lost with the recent peanut butter recall. They also helped Little Big Town raise money for the T.J. Martell Foundation by partaking in their Harley ride and helped Martina McBride and the YWCA by donating a jacket Dale wore in the "If You Were My Girl" video to her self-run auction. The guys also signed tons of autographs, hit the Grand Ole Opry, the Riverfront and the Hard Rock Cafe stages and was also presented plaques for their first #1 single.
* Emerson Drive Surprised by Impact of "Moments"
May 21, 2007 — Emerson Drive had high hopes for their latest single, "Moments," but lead singer Brad Mates admits the group was unprepared for the fast pace at which it is climbing the country charts, icebergradio.com reports.
"I knew that it was gonna get a good reaction, and it's an impact song," Brad says, "but honestly we didn't realize how much of an impact it was gonna have on people out there, and now [we're] feeling the momentum over the last eight weeks."
Brad said that in addition to the amount of airplay it's receiving, "Moments" is eliciting all kinds of personal response from fans. "It's really cool to hear feedback from people on the road and then in the office now, getting e-mails in," he says. "The great thing about country music is the lyrics always seem to ring true to a lot of people and it's great to hear different stories."
"Moments" sits at No. 3 this week on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The song is included on Emerson Drive's 2006 album, Countrified.
* Fellow Artists Embrace Chely Wright's Concert
May 22, 2007 — Chely Wright, whose 2007 Reading, Writing & Rhythm Benefit Concert will take place June 5 at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, has lined up an impressive roster of sponsors and artists.
Keith Anderson, Emerson Drive, Kellie Pickler, Mindy Smith, Taylor Swift, Trent Tomlinson, Clay Walker, Danielle Peck and Chris Young will perform, and as usual Chely promises some "special surprise guests" as well.
"I'm especially excited because we have the opportunity to perform with our peers in front of family, friends and fans to raise awareness surrounding the importance of music education for our nation's youth," said Clay. "It's going to be a great night for a very worthy cause."
"I'm pleased in the invitation to be part of such a wonderful and inspiring event," Danielle said. "Music is such an important part of everyday life and I applaud Chely's charge to make it so as part of our children's education."
"I'm looking forward to participating in this fun event," Kellie said. "Music is fun and should play in the background of every child's life."
Last year's event raised more than $100,000, and since its inception just seven years ago, the charity has donated gifts of music, musical instruments and services valued at just over $1 million to schools and students nationwide.
